Description
Viewed from the cliffside above, the rocky peninsula that juts out from the land looked blazingly bright and hot. Despite the unappealing look, we decided to go visit Point Kean, near Kaikoura on the South Island of New Zealand. The attraction is the fur seal colony. I figured we’d bake in the blazing hot sun reflecting off the white rocks and if we were lucky we’d see a seal waaaay off in the distance. Three hours later I could barely drag myself away! Surprisingly, it wasn’t as hot as I anticipated although it was bright! The sea breeze kept things comfortable. Then, the seals were all over the place! I came across the first one as I climbed over the uneven rocks and all of a sudden, there it was! You are supposed to keep a distance of at least 10 m from any of the seals and I was probably half that distance. Luckily for me, the seal didn’t seem to care and I quietly backed up. Later we saw a sign that read: “…do not attempt to touch or move a seal. Seals are wild animals and can bite causing serious injury.” Trust me, I didn’t attempt to move any seals! When there weren’t seals in sight, the amazing tidal seascape was fun to explore.
