Description
Joseph Campbell, a fruit merchant and Abraham Anderson, an icebox manufacturer formed the business that one day would become the Campbell Soup Company. In 1897, Dr. John T. Dorrance, a chemist at the company and nephew of then-president Arthur Dorrance, invented the formula for condensed soup. The familiar red and white label first appeared in 1898 along with the medallion in 1900 (Campbells soup awarded a medal for product excellence at the Paris Exposition). These classic red and white labels still adorn today three of their mainstay flavors chicken noodle, cream of mushroom and tomato soups. In January 1990, the 20 billionth can of Campbells Condensed Tomato Soup was produced.
